Becoming a Firefighter
1.  Stop by Fire Prevention to pick up application for VBVFD or download application HERE.
2.  You must comply with the minimum requirements to be considered a candidate for membership with VBVFD, submit copies of your driving record and a physical exam. Driving records can be obtained at the City Court with your driver license.
3.  You also provide a Drug and Alcohol screen test, which will be schedule soon after application is completed
4.  A back screen will also be scheduled through Fire Prevention.
5.  A background check, and an interview, will follow the process.
6.  Assist to three (3) consecutive business meetings, as described in the bylaws, to be voted in.
7.  Soon after becoming a support member, the new member can work on his/her training as a firefighter, and obtain the benefits of being a member of the VBVFD once proper licenses have been obtained.
8.  A candidate may enroll into EMT training with any educational institution. The members of the VBVFD have traditionally assisted to the EMT training offered at Indian River Community College.
9.  Once EMT training has been successfully completed, and State certification from the state of Florida as a licensed EMT has been issued, and proper documentation of such license is kept in file, the member can ride at any station as an EMT in any Rescue truck after obtaining Active status through Fire Prevention of IRCFR policies and procedures, and signed off by the Fire Chief and President of the VBVFD.
10.  The member may choose to enroll in Basic Fire Academy training or Paramedic. The VBVFD have traditionally enrolled in the Fire Academy soon after EMT training is finished. Certain policies for tuition reimbursement may apply for those who qualify, and it will be considered by individual case.
11.  There will be an Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) class that the member will eventually take, as well as HIPPA training, before obtaining active status.
12.  After Basic Fire Fighting training has been completed, and the proper state certifications are submitted to Fire Prevention, and kept in file, the member is clear to ride at any fire engine, at any station of Indian River County Fire Rescue, having obtained active status, and in good standing with the VBVFD.
13.  Identification of the member in active status will be issued.
14.  Policies and procedures in obtaining Support or Active status with VBVFD, as well as Tuition Reimbursement and participation with the organization will be discussed once the candidate becomes a member of VBVFD.
